Surf Life Saving Sydney congratulates Peter Agnew AM ESM on his election as President of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA).
Peter Agnew is a respected and dedicated surf lifesaver whose practical experience, integrity, and visionary leadership have inspired confidence across every level of the movement. Peter leads with purpose and compassion – motivating, engaging, and empowering those around him to achieve shared goals that strengthen both individuals and the organisation.
Peter’s understanding of the challenges faced by clubs and volunteers on the frontline is deeply personal and informed by decades of experience. He approaches change with care and foresight, ensuring that every initiative is meaningful, well-resourced, and designed to support those most affected. Over more than 40 years of continuous service, Peter has shown exceptional commitment to surf life saving, aquatic safety, and drowning prevention. His influence shaping not only the future of surf lifesaving in Australia, but also globally.
Throughout his remarkable journey, Peter has held numerous senior roles, including Club Captain and Vice President of North Bondi SLSC, Deputy President (9yrs) and President (4yrs) of Surf Life Saving Sydney, and most recently, President of Surf Life Saving NSW (2.5+yrs). His operational leadership includes more than two decades as a Patrol Captain and member of Sydney’s 24-hour emergency call-out network, along with his significant contributions to the Offshore Rescue Boat Service. As an Educator and Assessor, Peter has trained and mentored thousands of surf lifesavers, developed national awards, and co-created the vocational training qualifications that underpin SLSA’s Registered Training Organisation framework. His forward-thinking approach in areas such as UAV operations, radio systems, and rescue watercraft has helped modernise lifesaving practice and improve rescue capability nationwide.
Internationally, Peter’s contribution to drowning prevention has been outstanding. Through his work with the International Life Saving Federation, including as a member on the International Education & Rescue Committee and Co-Author of the first World Drowning Committee Report, he has helped shape the global conversation on aquatic safety. His leadership in creating SLSA’s Total Service Plan and Drowning Prevention Strategy continues to influence modern lifesaving policy and practice. In 2024 Peter was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to surf lifesaving as an administrator, official and educator.
Peter’s lifelong contribution to surf lifesaving as a competitor, official, educator, leader, and mentor is both extraordinary and inspiring. His passion and commitment have never wavered, as he continues to guide the movement forward.
