Surf Life Saving Sydney respects and acknowledges the traditional custodians across all the lands on which we live, work and patrol, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Either responding to call outs beyond the flags or supporting the SES and other emergency services during flooding, SLS Sydney members respond during emergencies 24/7 and 365 days a year. As a branch we work actively with local emergency services and supporting agencies through local committees, exercises and in the operations room to prevent, prepare, respond and recover from disasters.
Our Lifesavers are trained to respond to emergencies on and off the beach including flood rescue, AIIMS incident management team rolls, UAV piloting during emergencies such as flooding and searches or after disasters during recovery, and regularly provide liaison officers to support Police, SES and RFS operations. We also actively participate in emergency planning and coordination with our emergency service partners on local and regional emergency committees and rescue committees.

Part of lifesaving includes responding to emergencies at all times. SLS Sydney supports clubs and their call out teams to respond to incidents both on the beach and along the coastline. Call out Teams can be activated during patrol hours with a local patrolling team, or outside patrol hours at the request of Police and other rescue services. We would love to have new members from clubs across the Sydney Coastline join our call out teams.
Check out the State Emergency Response page identifying what’s involved in being part of our awesome Emergency Response call-out teams.
An Emergency Response Beacon, or ERB, is an autonomous emergency response tool at identified ‘black spot’ locations to assist in lifesaving activities. The ERB allows a person on the beach to communicate with the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre (SOC) to quickly gather important information, issue instructions or provide reassurance in an emergency situation.

The State Government has a number of plans and agreement in place which impact Surf Life Saving. Whilst quite high level, they provide the framework that our Emergency Management team operate within.
