SLSS Media Release - Coogee Community Swim - SLS Sydney

Surf Life Saving Sydney extends its sincere appreciation to Coogee Surf Life Saving Club, Randwick City Council, and the countless community members whose dedication and support ensured the success of the community swim in response to the tragic shark attack that occurred at the beach last Saturday week.

Our thoughts remain with the victim, Leah Stewart, and everyone affected by the tragic incident at Coogee Beach. Leah, a 35‑year‑old mother, was critically injured after being attacked by a 3.5‑metre shark while swimming at the beach. This deeply distressing event has shaken our community, and we extend our support and prayers to Leah, her family, her friends, and all who have been impacted.

Coogee SLSC played a pivotal role, providing expertise, volunteer power and an unwavering commitment to safety and community wellbeing. Their involvement exemplifies the very best of surf lifesaving values.

Randwick City Council’s partnership and logistical support were instrumental in bringing the event to life. Their continued investment in community initiatives strengthens local connections and enhances the vibrancy of our coastal suburbs.

Our thanks also go to Surf Life Saving Sydney’s Rescue Services team, Surf Life Saving NSW for their leadership, operational support, and the additional resources they mobilised to assist. We also recognise and thank the support of neighbouring surf clubs and their members and Council Life Guards who also played a pivotal in providing water safety and support. The collective response demonstrated the strength, skill, and dedication of the surf lifesaving community.

We also acknowledge the broader community — residents, families, local businesses and volunteers who contributed time, resources, and enthusiasm by either swimming or supporting Leah and her family financially. This collective effort emphasises the strong community spirit that once again has been tested by an unfortunate event.

The success of this event reflects what can be achieved when organisations and community members work together toward a shared goal.
