Vale, Gus Staunton MBE OBE

Fondly known to all as Gus, he was a cherished Life Member of Surf Life Saving Sydney and a loyal and dedicated member of Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club since the early 1950s. As we honour his extraordinary life, we also celebrate the profound and lasting legacy he leaves within our organisation and the broader surf life saving community.

Gus’s service was nothing short of remarkable. He gave decades of his life to Surf Life Saving — as Sydney Branch Patron (2001–2003) and Honourary Secretary (1954–1974), before being awarded Sydney Branch Life Membership in 1971. His contributions were recognised far beyond our Branch, with Life Membership of Surf Life Saving NSW in 1972, Life Membership of Surf Life Saving Australia soon after, and induction into the Hall of Fame for his exceptional leadership in Administration. His impact extended across the world stage, serving as President of World Life Saving, later being named an Honoured Member of WLS, and receiving the rare distinction of Grand Knight of ILS.

Gus truly embodied the spirit of Surf Life Saving. His vision, generosity of spirit, and unwavering commitment were an inspiration to all who knew him. He shaped the foundations of lifesaving and operations across Sydney, influencing generations of members through his wisdom, determination, and passion for service.

His legacy is one of kindness, strength, and wholehearted devotion. Gus gave selflessly, with enthusiasm and integrity, leaving an indelible mark on our movement. His life’s work will continue to guide and inspire all who follow in his footsteps.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Gus’s family and loved ones. He will be greatly missed, but his memory and influence will forever remain part of our story.
